Understanding Echocardiograms
An Echocardiogram is a non-invasive screening process that uses ultrasound technology to create detailed images of the heart. This invaluable procedure allows doctors to assess the structure and function of the heart, helping them diagnose any potential abnormalities or conditions.
The Echocardiogram Process
During an Echocardiogram, a trained technician applies a gel to the patient’s chest and uses a handheld device called a transducer. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the heart and create a visual representation on a monitor. This process is entirely painless and does not involve any radiation.
There are no specific preparations required before an Echocardiogram. Patients can eat and drink normally ahead of the test. The procedure typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
