What is a Breast MRI?

Breast MRI is a specialized screening and diagnostic method that uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology to create detailed images of the breast tissue. Unlike traditional screening methods, our Breast MRI offers superior accuracy and effectiveness in detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages.

How a Breast MRI works

The process is simple and non-invasive. Patients lie comfortably on a table which slides into the MRI machine. Utilizing a magnetic field and radio waves, the machine generates high-resolution images of the breast tissue. With the patient lying face down, the breasts are gently positioned into a comfortable, padded “cup” as opposed to between two tight plates.

When is a Breast MRI Recommended?

Your provider may recommend a breast MRI if you:

  • Have a high risk of breast cancer
  • Have dense breast tissue that limits mammogram visibility
  • Need further evaluation after a mammogram or breast diagnostic ultrasound
  • Are planning or following up after a biopsy MRI
  • Require advanced imaging for treatment planning

If you’re searching for a Fast Breast MRI for breast cancer screening, MH Imaging now offers this new service at our Kenosha, Milwaukee and Madison locations.

Fast Breast MRI is a 10–15-minute, contrast-enhanced screening tool for finding early-stage cancer, especially in dense breast tissue. It is faster, more comfortable, and less expensive ($375 out-of-pocket) than traditional 60-75-minute MRIs, but it is not a replacement for annual mammograms.

Key Aspects of Fast Breast MRI

Who Should Get It: Ideal for women with dense breast tissue or average-to-intermediate risk, providing a higher cancer detection rate than 3D mammograms alone. Women are eligible for a FAST MRI if they meet all the following criteria:

  • A negative mammogram within 11 months of the scheduled FAST MRI.
  • No new breast symptoms (i.e., palpable lump, nipple discharge, etc.).
  • Breast cancer risk assessment with lifetime risk less than 20%.
  • No diagnosis of breast cancer within the past two (2) years.
  • Does not qualify for traditional breast MRI for any reason.

Procedure: Uses a magnetic field and intravenous (IV) contrast to highlight abnormalities in about 10–15 minutes.

Benefits: It detects cancers that mammography misses and has a higher sensitivity for finding small tumors.

Cost/Insurance: Generally, these are self-pay, costing $375 at our MHI locations. Insurances do not pay for this type of preventative exam yet.

Limitations:It is not designed to replace annual mammograms, which remain the only screening tool proven to reduce breast cancer mortality.

Breast MRI vs. Other Breast Imaging

While mammograms and breast diagnostic ultrasound are important tools, MRI offers a higher level of detail.

Benefits of Breast MRI

  • Detects smaller or hidden abnormalities
  • Provides clearer imaging for dense breast tissue
  • Helps guide biopsy MRI procedures
  • Enhances diagnostic accuracy in complex cases

Unlike mammography, there is no compression—making it a more comfortable experience for many patients. MRI is often used alongside other breast radiology methods to provide a complete picture of breast health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Unlike a mammogram, a breast MRI involves no compression. You’ll lie face down while your breasts rest comfortably in padded openings. The scan is quiet, gentle, and completely non-invasive.

A breast MRI generally takes 45 to 60 minutes. You’ll be asked to remain still while the scan captures detailed images, but the table is cushioned and designed for comfort. Plan for a little extra time before and after your scan for check-in and preparation.

No, a referral is not required for self-pay patients. You can schedule your breast MRI directly with MH Imaging for one affordable rate.
