MRI exams are common diagnostic procedures, and most patients know that an exam can have a claustrophobic atmosphere because of a traditional machine’s enclosed design. However there are a couple things patients don’t know about MRI exams until they actually have one that are worth knowing beforehand.
MRIs are noisy. Patients are usually prepared to feel some type of claustrophobic discomfort, but they aren’t usually prepared for what they will hear. During the screening, it is common to hear loud, repetitive noises when the machine is taking pictures of the patient. Ear plugs or headphones to listen to music are generally provided to reduce the loud noises during the procedure.
Patients can’t wear metal during the exam. The machine produces a strong magnetic field so patients can’t wear any clothing or accessories with metal on it including attire with zippers and jewelry. A patient may be asked to wear a hospital gown or scrubs. MRIs can’t be performed on patients with a cardiac pacemaker, some cardiac valves and stents, otologic implants, implanted neurostimulators and non-titanium aneurysm clips in the head.
There are different types of MRI machines. Traditional or “closed” MRI machines aren’t the only design out there. Open MRI machines (less claustrophobic for patients), upright MRI scanners (patients sit up) and more options are available. MRI costs can range significantly. Price ranges for MRIs vary, and quotes can go anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars!
